Bowman on The Way of the Samurai PDF Print E-mail

Your weekly dose of Bowman, who also writes at Prolix Patriot. This time Bowman looks at the Democrats' "seppuku strategy" for passing their health care reform legislation.

In medieval Japan the samurai were the pinnacle of society, but according to their Buddhist beliefs they were also at the bottom of the karmic scale.  It was said that the punishment for the samurai’s life of violence was to be reincarnated as a samurai.  By all appearances, the Democrats are trapped in a similar cycle.  Before our eyes, they are committing the political equivalent of seppuku by pursuing the same sweeping health care reforms that destroyed their majority in 1994.

It is all the more appropriate to compare the current health care disaster to ritual suicide because the samurai believed the act of self-destruction was a way to cleanse the soul before being reincarnated.  In the same way, the Democrats believe that they must achieve health care reform at any cost in order to purge the grave dishonor of the Clinton years.  To a sensible person, this might seem reckless, but if we consider the almost religious quality of the liberal worldview, it makes perfect sense.

Like the samurai, Democrats believe that they have been entrusted by the cosmos with a special task to care for the less fortunate.  The astounding arrogance of Democrat leaders in Congress in the face of vehement public opposition to their plans is testimony to their exalted self-regard.  Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid are too busy congratulating themselves for their own cleverness to take notice of lesser beings.

However, the samurai also had a dark side.  Because of their disdain for their own lives, they also believed that the lives of their inferiors were expendable.  It is said that the samurai would often use living people to test the quality of their swords, and to practice their fighting techniques.  Similarly, the Democrats have no scruples about using the American people as a guinea pig for their experiment in socialized medicine.  Even the Romans did not sink to this level of barbarity.

In the end, the noble ideals of the samurai as protectors evolved into a gruesome caricature.  In World War II, officers were given samurai swords and expected to accept only victory or death.  As the war became increasingly desperate, the world witnessed the final perversion of the samurai code with the kamikaze.  In the Democrats’ rush to oblivion, one wonders whether they still are acting out of honor, or if they have lost all control and are strapped into a flying bomb.
