On Latino Vote, Fiorina Spooks the Left

Posted by: Thomas Peters in APP Blog

Thomas Peters

When it comes to Latinos, Carly Fiorina, the recent victor of the California Senate nomination for Sen. Barbara Boxer's seat, is worrying the Left.

Even before her victory, liberal bloggers and writers were seeking to drive a wedge between her and the Latino vote. And now that she has won, the barrage has begun in earnest.

What's interesting about these attacks is that they never - from what I have read - even try to make the case that the current occupant of this Senate seat, Barbara Boxer, has done anything to earn the Latino Vote.

When it comes to Latino issues, in fact, Boxer is missing in action. Liberals must therefore be content to spend their time attempting to pull down Fiorina, as opposed to actually weighing her merits against the incumbent she is challenging.

So what has Fiorina been saying about immigration that they find so outrageous?

"Fiorina: The truth is this: the federal government isn’t doing its job. It’s the federal goverment’s job to secure the border. The Obama administration has defunded securing the border. And while Barbara Boxer stands up and challenges the constitutionality of the Arizona law and villifies the people of Arizona, what she should be doing — what I’d be doing — is figuratively standing on the President’s desk and saying “Mr. President, the federal government needs to do its job and secure the border.” (source)

Well, that actually sounds very reasonable to me.

How about her position on the Arizona immigration law?

"... when asked ... if Republicans needed to make any changes in their approach to the growing Hispanic community, Fiorina replied, "There has been a very unfortunate racist tone that has emerged in a lot of the discussion about immigration and that's inexcusable. We must be a country that welcomes legal immigrants to this country. We must be a country that recognizes that we have industries like agriculture that have depended on temporary migrant labor for generations." (source)

Again, sounds good to me.

In fact, it sounds good to some Latinos engaged in politics as well:

Enough with the likes of Barbara Boxer and Pelosi. These type of women have got to go, and we should continue to support Reaganesque woman in politics. Of course, we love Carly Fiorina because she is pro life. Carly is for less government and for less taxes. She has common sense and we can complete the Reagan Revolution with political candidates such as Carly. (Somos Republicans)

Reading through what Fiorina has actually said about Latino issues, and realizing how little Boxer has to show for her time in the Senate when it comes to advocating for Latinos, well, it's not hard to see why the liberal establishment in California is feelig a bit spooked.

I agree when you wrote:
